SAFEZA AVA-X Wins SelectUSA Defense Category at 2026 Investment Summit

In Washington, DC, SAFEZA AVA-X took first place in the Defense pitching session at the 2026 SelectUSA Investment Summit—selected from more than 230 global applicants and beating eight other defence finalists on a sovereign AI platform built for real-world security.

Cape Town–based SAFEZA AVA-X has won the Defense category at the 2026 SelectUSA Investment Summit in National Harbor, Maryland. Founder and CEO Armand de Beer pitched alongside eight other defence finalists before U.S. governors, senators, and international investors during the summit held 3–6 May 2026—bringing the category title home for South Africa.

SelectUSA confirmed the win publicly. The U.S. Embassy in South Africa followed with congratulations, naming Safeza its Pitchfest 2026 winner. For a South African security-AI company, that recognition is more than a headline—it is a credential in one of the most demanding rooms in global tech.

From 230+ applicants to category winner

The 2026 SelectUSA Investment Summit was the largest to date: more than 5,500 attendees from over 100 international markets, and more than $56 billion in new and planned investment commitments catalysed around the event.

Competition for the SelectUSA Tech pitching programme was fierce. More than 230 startups applied across six industry sessions. Only 48 companies from over 27 countries were selected to pitch. SAFEZA AVA-X was among them—and then among nine defence finalists—before taking first in Defense.

Other 2026 category winners included Rewind Earth (Energy, Israel), MegaPro Biomedical (Health, Taiwan), StealCut (ICT/Software World Finals champion, South Korea), VanaM Inc. (Open 1, South Korea), and Quantum Brilliance (Open 2, Australia).

Why the pitch landed

Safeza walked into that room with a clear sovereign-AI proposition: Swiss-engineered SAFEZA AVA-X models, commercialised for African and allied markets, trained on demanding real-world conditions, and deployed on-premises without reliance on consumer cloud AI providers.

That stack—facial recognition, object detection, access control, and video analytics that stays under operator control—is exactly what defence and law enforcement buyers want to hear when data sovereignty, auditability, and operational resilience matter as much as accuracy.

Armand de Beer later summarised the moment for South African press: pitching in front of U.S. governors, senators, and major investors alongside eight other innovative defence companies was, for a South African start-up, remarkable validation.

Engineered in Switzerland. Proven in South Africa.

SAFEZA AVA-X is the South African commercialisation arm of Swiss-engineered SAFEZA AVA-X video analytics. The core technology originated at SAFEZA AVA-X AG in Switzerland and is already used in European law enforcement contexts. In Africa, models are trained and battle-tested on some of the most diverse and demanding security environments in the world—conditions that harden performance before systems ever reach a new market.

Detection accuracy of 99.82% and a focus on reducing false positives are not marketing slogans for operators under pressure; they translate into fewer wasted deployments, fewer unnecessary investigations, and more attention on genuine threats.

What comes next

SelectUSA winners typically convert summit visibility into U.S. market entry. For SAFEZA AVA-X, the Defense win accelerated that path: high-value meetings at the summit, international press coverage, and—weeks later—the formal launch of SAFEZA AVA-X, Inc. as the group’s United States entity.

U.S. partners, agencies, and investors can follow that market presence at ava-x.us—the dedicated site for SAFEZA AVA-X in the United States.

The story is larger than a trophy. It is proof that mission-grade, on-premises AI video analytics from a Swiss–South African technology group can compete—and win—on the global defence stage.
